The story follows a young woman named Andy who, ten years ago, worked as an assistant to the successful Miranda who is the editor-in-chief of a respected fashion magazine and terrorizes her staff. Having quit this job so coveted in the world of fashion yet which job she could not keep due to her boss' erratic behavior and demands, Andy and a former coworker at that same magazine - Emily who is now her best friend - decide to start their own magazine. Andy is also madly in love with her boyfriend Max, a handsome man from a wealthy family, who proposed and she is set to marry. Andy is on top of the world until she finds a letter from Max's mother to him who urges him not to marry her since he has recently met his ex-girlfriend on a trip and there might be some feelings left between them - which encounter Max never mentioned to Andy. Andy confronts Max who comes clean and assures her nothing happened, nor will happen, hence Andy puts the letter out of her mind and they get married, and then move to an apartment in Chelsea. Her longtime boyfriend, Alex, abruptly moved to Mississippi for a teaching job and lost touch with her. Her parents divorced. Her best friend, Lily, moved to Colorado, where she has three kids with her live-in boyfriend.
The letter also mentions that Max ran into his ex-girlfriend, Katherine, during a trip to Bermuda, about which Max fails to tell Andy. She gives birth to a girl, Clementine Rose.
She joins a new mom support group, where she meets Sophie, a young woman who brings her niece to each meeting. Sophie reveals to the group that she is cheating on her live-in boyfriend, Xander.
Andy discovers that Alex has moved back to New York when she runs into him one day. They have lunch together where he reveals that he has a longtime girlfriend. She works on short fiction and finances her unemployment with profits made from reselling the designer clothing she was provided for her Paris trip.
Seventeen downloads one of her stories. At the novel's end, she returns to the Elias-Clark building to discuss a position at one of the company's other magazines and sees Miranda's new junior assistant, who looks as harried and put-upon as she once did.
Weisberger stated in publicity materials that Priestly's demands are partial fiction and a composite of actual experiences she and her friends had in their first jobs. Kate Betts , a former editor of Harper's Bazaar who also worked for Wintour at one point in her career, spared no barb in the Times Book Review , stressing the main character's ingratitude at the unique opportunity of working at Vogue: Maslin avoided naming either the magazine where Weisberger actually worked or the woman she allegedly modeled her main character on.
Critics who favored the book admitted it had problems, as any first novel might, but praised it as a "fun, frivolous read". The film version was released on June 30, by 20th Century Fox.
