In , I recommended Talend to a client that was in the market for a new data integration tool. I got a call from a technology staffing company that the client was using, asking why I recommended Talend and not Informatica or DataStage.
They explained they had never heard of Talend and didn't think I was serving the client's best interest by recommending a tool that was relatively new. Needless to say, last year, the same technology staffing company tried hard to get me to lead one of their Talend projects.
They'd since become a believer and were now touting Talend. What has been your biggest challenge?
Development-wise, one challenge there are many that comes to mind was creating a job to generate a monster XML file of several hundred nested fields in a tight delivery window. This exercise forced me to understand the intricacies of all the Talend xml generation components and to be creative in working around the infamous 65k java method size limitation when dealing with xml files with lots of fields. What has been your most fulfilling project? The question was how to reliably trigger jobs for each printer, and only trigger them when there was a need to do so.
The client had called in a number of vendors for proposals and was being quoted some scary numbers. Using Talend, I built a job that would check for availability of service orders in a system of record and create file triggers that the BI system would be watching for every 10 seconds. The solution was beautiful and worked for many years last time I checked, it was still running.
What will you be working on next? I'm currently working on some big data projects leveraging Hive, Pig and Talend to perform processing in Hadoop.
One of the areas I enjoy working in is predictive analytics. Some years ago, I was tempted to deepen my skills in that area on some [other] leading platforms. On my wish list is tighter integration of Talend with the Hadoop ecosystem.
