Selfish are so very truly not the same at all. But similar right? She went to the store to buy one pattern and she bought one pattern. In contrast, Ms. And perhaps another after that. Okay, another way in which Mrs. Selfish differ? When Ms. Another difference? Selfish does not often leave the fabric store with a tiny little bag like that under her arm. I have a hard time imaging Mrs. Vogue lumbering out of Mood with two enormous shopping bags dragging along the ground, trying to wrestle herself and her packages through the subway turnstile.
Selfish does not change into business casual to sew. Usually I start off in sweats which can be easily tugged off if I need to try on my masterpiece in progress, and eventually this just turns into me sewing in my underwear.
Hey cool! Selfish also uses her dining room table for sewing! Of course, Ms.
Selfish does NOT use her dining room table for dining. Oh my goodness! Once or twice at most maybe.
I have perhaps torn a straight edge in the past, but this seems like a step for a real stickler. Oh I know! I love the little illustrations! The remind me of Audrey Hepburn! Thanks for your comment! Sunday, June 29, Vogue Sewing book Its time to get a little sophisticated around here!
You maybe remember earlier this year I showed you some photos from the Simplicity Sewing book of Well I also happen to own the Vogue sewing book from - which is completely different to the Simplicity book. Everything is way more couture focused and speaks a lot more of Paris and the classic sewing techniques you can learn. Very fancy!
So while one of these books is fun, colourful and the models are all dancing around.
So lets have a look! None of the models are credited, but I think Jean Shrimpton may be featured along side other popular models of the time but did not keep their fame like Jean. I actually have an 80s edition but it's not listed in here so I am adding this edition instead. This is a really solid reference. I read it pretty much cover to cover but there's a lot that's hard for me to absorb without immediately applying it to a project.
There is a bit at the beginning of the book that I think really dates it, primarily that it tells you that if you don't like the way you look you should just go ahead and lose weight.
I would imagine that's been removed from later edit I actually have an 80s edition but it's not listed in here so I am adding this edition instead. I would imagine that's been removed from later editions. Definitely a worthwhile reference to have available, and pretty comprehensive. I'm positive I'll be referring back to it often. Has a lot of good techniques, but as a beginning sewer it is really annoying that they purport to give you all the information that you need as a beginner from the beginning of the book, but as you read through you get more and more over your head because they keep assuming more and more information about sewing that they have never taught.
One of the best sewing books I have ever found. If you are like me and your childhood had to be more academic than creative, you will have missed out on many hours experimenting with fabrics. I wanted to fast track to understanding what I was doing and this book gave me all the logic I needed to understand how to construct and fit garments properly.
I prefer vintage fashion so I bought a copy published more in the era I was wanting. I expect the updated versions are fabulous too. Aug 02, Kara rated it it was amazing Shelves: I had just downloadd "The Sewing Book" when this arrived via inter-library loan.
For some reason, I'd expected Vogue Sewing to be boring, less informative, and dry, but I ended up loving it. It doesn't have the detailed illustrations of The Sewing Book or The Sewing Bible, but it does have very informative sections on working with different types of fabric and tailoring that I really enjoyed. A classic, encyclopedic guide. The fashions are ridiculously dated, but the technical advice is sound.
Nov 12, Christy rated it it was amazing. Excellent reference guide for beginners and experienced seamstresses.
An essential book that I would recommend to be in any sewing library. All sewers. Everything you ever wanted to know about sewing but were afraid to ask is included in this book with clear, concise directions, illustrations, and photographs. Dec 23, Pam Novack rated it it was amazing Recommends it for: People who sew and like to learn, too. This is one of my go-to reference books for sewing.
My mother gave me my copy when I was a teenager and, even though it's been updated, I still like referring to my original copy.
It's a great resource! Apr 27, Lisa rated it it was amazing. This is a terrific reference guide for those who love to sew. I am not sure if would be helpful for an absolute beginner, however.
